Lawyer Resume for Brazil: ATS Guide for Legal Professionals
Brazil has more than 1.3 million lawyers registered with the OAB (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil, the Brazilian Bar Association) — the largest bar association in the world. With that level of competition, major law firms and corporate legal departments have adopted ATS systems to screen candidates before any human review. The problem: many legal resumes still follow an outdated, dense, formalistic model that ATS software simply cannot process.
This guide covers how to format a lawyer’s resume for ATS filters without sacrificing the professional credibility the role demands. See also the ATS resume template for the general rules before applying the legal-specific tips below.
How to format the OAB registration number
OAB registration is to law what CRM is to medicine: without it, the resume has no professional standing. ATS systems scan legal resumes specifically for the term OAB.
Place the number in the header alongside name, email, and phone. Always use the full format:
OAB/SP 123.456 (São Paulo state bar)
OAB/RJ 654.321 (Rio de Janeiro state bar)
If you hold registration in more than one state, list all of them. Never omit the state chapter — the ATS may search for “OAB/SP” specifically.
Keywords by area of law
The most common mistake lawyers make with ATS is using generic language. Each legal specialty has its own vocabulary, and the system filters exactly on those terms.
Labor Law (Direito Trabalhista)
- CLT (Brazilian Labor Code), employment law, labor litigation
- Collective bargaining, union relations, mass litigation
- Labor court, TST, TRT (labor appellate courts)
- Wrongful termination, severance, FGTS (employment fund)
Tax Law (Direito Tributário)
- Tax planning, fiscal compliance, tax disputes
- Brazilian tax types: ICMS, ISS, PIS, COFINS, IRPJ, CSLL
- CARF (Tax Appeals Council), Federal Revenue, SEFAZ
- Tax reform, CBS, IBS (new Brazilian tax framework)
Civil Law and Contracts
- Civil litigation, contract drafting, contract management
- Mediation, arbitration, dispute resolution
- Due diligence, real estate law, fiduciary alienation
Corporate Law and M&A
- Mergers and acquisitions, M&A, corporate restructuring
- Corporate governance, compliance, LGPD (Brazilian data protection law)
- CVM (securities regulator), BACEN (central bank), financial regulation
- Joint ventures, shareholders agreements, commercial contracts
Law firm vs. in-house corporate legal department
The same resume does not work for both. Identify the role type before sending and adjust the emphasis:
Law firm: emphasize specialization depth, case volume, and litigation performance. Highlight number of cases managed, hearing success rates, client sector coverage (without naming clients), publications, and academic activities.
In-house (corporate legal department): emphasize business judgment, risk management, and cross-department collaboration. Highlight contract management, LGPD/compliance experience, liability reduction, financial results, and management of external counsel.
How to describe legal experience with results
ATS systems score resumes with action verbs and measurable data. The “responsible for” construction communicates nothing and generates no points in automated ranking. Comparison:
Before (generic):
Responsible for labor hearings and drafting of procedural documents.
After (results-oriented):
Handled 45 labor hearings per month with a 78% favorable settlement rate. Developed a mass litigation strategy that reduced the portfolio’s labor liability by R$2.3 million in 12 months.
Strong verbs for legal resumes: negotiated, structured, reduced, advised, implemented, managed, represented, drafted, coordinated.
Education and certifications for lawyers
- Law degree— full institution name and graduation year. If OAB bar exam passed, note it: “Passed OAB Bar Exam 2020/1.”
- Postgraduate specialization— example: “LLM in Tax Law — IBDT, 2022.”
- LLM (international)— if you hold a foreign LLM, list country and institution. This is filtered specifically in M&A and corporate roles.
- Continuing education — LGPD, compliance, arbitration (CBAr), mediation (CNJ). List with hours and year.
- Languages— legal English is an eliminatory criterion at international firms. Specify: “Advanced English (contract reading and client correspondence).”
Recommended structure for a lawyer’s resume
- Header — Name, OAB/[state] [number], email, phone, LinkedIn, city
- Professional summary — 2–3 lines: practice area + years of experience + key differentiator
- Professional experience — reverse chronological, with title, firm/company, dates, and result bullets
- Education — law degree, postgraduate, LLM
- Certifications and courses — compliance, LGPD, arbitration, languages
- Publications and academic activities (optional) — articles, conferences, teaching

Frequently asked questions
Where should the OAB registration number appear on the resume?
In the header or contact section, next to name, email, and phone. Use the full format: OAB/SP 123.456. The OAB (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil) is the Brazilian Bar Association — its registration number is the legal equivalent of a medical license. Hiding it in the body of the resume may prevent the ATS from identifying you as a qualified lawyer.
Should the practice area appear in the professional summary?
Yes. Be specific: “Labor lawyer with 5 years in mass litigation” is far more effective than “Lawyer with diverse experience.” The ATS filters by area and the recruiter wants to see your focus immediately.
Can I list cases or clients on the resume?
Never name clients — professional secrecy prohibits it. Use metrics instead: “Managed a portfolio of 120 active cases” or “Reduced labor liability by 35% in 18 months.” Concrete numbers demonstrate results without violating confidentiality — and score better in ATS filters.
Does a lawyer’s resume need to be formal and lengthy?
No. The ATS doesn’t evaluate formality — it evaluates keywords and structure. A 3-page resume packed with dense text may be filtered out before a human sees it. Limit to 1–2 pages, use action verbs and bullet points, and prioritize what’s most relevant to the specific role.
